Sure, VW cheated on emissions, and that’s enough of a reason to fine them. But there is a much larger reason for levying the fine they did.
1st: Why the fuck are you guys defending Volkswagen? This is not the innocent little guy. This is a company with over $100 billion in revenues, who got caught fucking cheating about the worst of the shit that can come out of an engine.
2nd: Appeals, this fine will be decreased. Lawyers will help VW seem like they only cheated a little and all sorts of bullshit.
3rd and most importantly: If they did nothing why wouldnt everyone else cheat? And why wouldn’t they cheat other things too? Why wouldnt Toyota bring specially reinforced cars for crash tests? If the consequences are so low why would they stop?
The EPA had to make a stance, because if they didn’t this would not be a one time thing anymore.

You can support an individual action without supporting the agency making said action.

I agree completely. And I hope the EPA fines VW so hard, they can afford to in-house test and certify vehicles instead of putting the OEMs on the honor system.

I’m good with that. lol.

The EPA just wants money. Did anybody die? No, carry on.

Take one look at the absolutely shitty air quality in China and you'll understand why we need the EPA. Industries will never police themselves.

Apparently the BMW X3 Diesel is also over the limit on pollutants.

Id also like to point out that what they did violated FEDERAL laws. That’s a big no no.

Even for someone who doesn’t think emissions laws matter at all, here’s the bottom line; VW knew said laws were going to be in play when creating these products and chose to violate them anyway to get a market advantage over competitors who were in compliance. The folks who made the choice to do that put the company’s bottom line as well as the livelyhoods of everyone in VW global in jeopardy, and I’m sure giving governments across the world billions in fines will not help VW become competitive against other carmakers (who will also pay the price in the market if they were pushing diesel in the US and other places hit by the scandal)
For those reasons, the decision to cheat is simply inexcusable. The responsible parties shouldn’t just get fired for causing all this damage, they should face jail time.

I’m not saying what VW did was right, I’m just saying that, compared to what other people did and got away with, VW is getting a ton of scrutiny. Here in NC, Duke Energy cut corners and poisoned people’s water supply, and got away with a slap on the wrist. The NC State club of dumbasses Legislature is currently passing a law to allow more self regulation on environmental issues. On the automotive side of the coin, GM only had to pay $900 million for killing over 1,000 people. also, Mercedes got the import law passed so that people couldn’t grey import Mercedes’s for cheaper, therefore forcing them to pay more Mercedes’s. That sounds illegal and should be illegal, but it’s not.
American corporations typically get off with more bullshit because they are American, and therefore “American jobs are being saved.” (despite most of their cars being made outside of the US.) Why do you think GM and Chrysler have been bailed out twice, and that the Big Three have gotten away with numerous safety issues? It’s because they’re American. Volkswagen, and Foreign companies in general, get more scrutiny because they aren’t American. The US government could have easily bailed out Peugeot USA, Citroen USA, or Renault- AMC, but didn’t, despite the companies having a history of making good products, unlike the big three, who were bailed out multiple times, and later made the same mistakes that led to them getting bailed out the first time. If American companies got the same amount of scrutiny Foreign ones did, then I would be ok with this.

It will.be interesting to see where that one goes too.

Now we just need to tell the NC General Assembly this.

While I can’t speak to every issue. The reason why GM wasn’t fined more was because the NHSTA doesn’t have the same authority to fine that the EPA does.
The reason why GM and Chrysler were bailed out was because they have to large of an impact on the economy. The Peugeot, and Citroen employ tens of thousands of people? You also have the anti bailout republican government in power at the time.

But who’s economy are GM and Chrysler helping? Most of the cars are manufactured outside of the US, and many of the cars mad ein the US (Traverse, Sierra/Silverado, Wrangler, Viper, RAM tucks, CTS, etc) guzzle gas, and the extraction of gas creates more emissions than VW was letting off. Also, the manufacturing of most of those cars creates large amounts of emissions, which the EPA has done nothing about.

Well fuck the EPA for bailing out GM and Chrysler? Two different agencies dude.
Also, in addition to factory employees GM and Chrysler employed 116,200 Americans as of 2012. Thats includes IT, accounting, admin, etc. Sounds slightly detrimental to lose those jobs in an economy tetering on the edge of depression. And doesn’t even include the collateral damage of those lost jobs.

True, it wasn’t the EPA’s call to bail out the big 3.
Also, what about all of the VAG employs who’s jobs are at risk due to the scandal? VW hasn’t screwed up multiple times, unlike GM and Chrysler.

Well the Jetta TDI and the Golf TDI are both mexican built, so the economic effect would be only a fraction at best. On top of the fact that the economy is in a much different place.

I honestly could care less about the entire thing. Chevrolet killed people and tried to cover it up, VW cheated on emissions.
Btw, I’m not trying to have half of you gang up on me like when I make stupid comments on FP. When I make stupid comments here, I like to be undistubrbd.
I'm not sober, if that helps or explains anything.

No but they will. The hundreds of thousands of cars speeding up global warming and taking years off humanity on the whole is kinda shitty.
